New visitors: who are they and why target them?
New visitors are people landing on your site for the very first time since Claspo’s script was installed. This means all users visiting your site before installation will be treated as new initially.
New visitors don’t yet know your brand, so this is your chance to make a strong first impression.
Examples:
Offer a special welcome discount.
Share a lead magnet (eBook, checklist, free trial).
Guide them through a quick product tour.
Returning visitors: why treat them differently?
These are people who’ve already been on your site. Since they know your brand, you don’t need to introduce yourself again — instead, give them reasons to stay engaged.
For example:
Remind them about new products.
Share a loyalty offer.
Invite them to join a referral program.
How Claspo detects new and returning visitors
When someone visits your site for the first time, Claspo stores a small tag in their browser using local storage. If that tag is present the next time they visit, Claspo knows it’s a returning visitor. If it’s missing — for example, because they cleared their browser data, switched devices, or are using incognito mode — they’ll be counted as new again.
Claspo keeps a session open for 30 minutes. If someone steps away but comes back within that time, it’s still the same session. After 30 minutes, a new one begins, and the visitor is recognized as returning.
If your setup requires a clearer distinction — for example, separating actual first-timers from known returning users — you can pass visitor status using JavaScript variables. This gives you more precise control over who sees what.
How to set visitor targeting in Claspo
Go to Triggering → To whom.
Under Visitors, choose:
All – widget shows to everyone (default).
New – widget shows only to first-time visitors.
Returning – widget shows only to visitors who have been to your site before.
Once selected, Claspo will automatically apply this rule to your widget display conditions.
