This helps avoid showing the offer to visitors who leave right away and are unlikely to convert. This guide shows three common ways to do it: target engaged visitors, protect high-intent pages, and show different offers to new and returning visitors.
Prepare your widget
Choose a template and customize it for your brand, or create a widget from scratch if you already have a ready design. For more details, read the guides on template customization and creating widgets from scratch. Then set up exit-intent targeting.
1. Show exit-intent pop-ups only to engaged visitors
Set up the targeting:
1. Open Audience & Triggering.
2. Turn on Exit intent.
3. Turn on Spent on the page or Read the page by.
4. Set the time or scroll percentage.
5. Publish the widget.
How this setup works
The pop-up appears only when the visitor has shown interest and then starts to leave. For example, a visitor reads at least 10% of a product page and moves the cursor toward the browser tab. This is a good moment to show something useful: a small discount, a signup offer, or a guide.
The pop-up is not shown to every visitor who leaves. It appears only after someone has spent time with the page or scrolled through part of it.
2. Reduce checkout abandonment with an exit-intent offer
Use this setup for pages where leaving usually means a missed order or lead, such as cart, checkout, or pricing pages. Instead of showing the same exit pop-up across the whole site, you can keep the offer tied to these high-intent pages.
Set up the targeting:
1. Go to Audience & Triggering.
2. Open When to display.
3. Turn on Exit intent unless you use a template where this trigger is already preconfigured.
4. Go to On pages and click Add condition.
5. Select URL, and choose the matching rule, such as equals.
6. Enter the page URL.
7. Publish the widget.
How this setup works
The pop-up appears only on the selected page. For checkout, you can use it to show a discount, free shipping reminder, or support message before the visitor leaves.
This is useful for pages where visitors are close to placing an order.
3. Show different exit offers to new and returning visitors
Use this setup when new and returning visitors should see different exit-intent messages.
Before you begin
Prepare a separate widget for each visitor type. For example:
new visitors: “Get 10% off your first order”
returning visitors: “Welcome back — your loyalty reward is waiting”
Set up the targeting
1. Go to Audience & Triggering.
2. Open When to display.
3. Turn on Exit intent unless you use a template where this trigger is already preconfigured.
4. Find the visitor type settings — To whom.
5. Select New.
6. Publish the widget.
7. Repeat the same setup for the Returning visitor widget.
How this setup works
Each visitor sees the exit offer that fits their relationship with your brand. A first-time visitor can get a first-order discount before leaving. A returning visitor can see a loyalty offer. This makes the message more relevant than showing the same exit pop-up to everyone.
