For example, instead of showing a generic “item” in the message, you can insert the product name from the current page or the visitor’s cart.
What you can personalize with Shopify properties
Shopify properties are useful when a widget should not sound the same for every visitor. In Merge tags, they let you pull dynamic content into the text, so the message can refer to the product, cart, discount, or customer behind the visit.
Cart-based messages
What you want to do | Properties to use | How it helps |
Remind shoppers what they are leaving behind |
| Use the product from the cart in an exit-intent pop-up. |
Push shoppers toward a larger order |
| Mention the current cart value or item count before showing a free shipping, gift, or bundle offer. |
Reinforce an applied discount |
| Show that the discount code is already active, so the shopper has one more reason to finish checkout. |
Make cross-sell copy more relevant |
| Match the message to the type, tag, vendor, or SKU already in the cart. |
Product-page messages
What you want to do | Properties to use | How it helps |
Make a product offer feel specific |
| Replace generic wording like “this item” with the actual product name or price. |
Collect interest for unavailable products |
| Mention the exact product in a back-in-stock or waitlist message. |
Adjust copy for product groups |
| Use the product type or tag in the message when the offer is tied to a category, collection, or campaign. |
Customer-based messages
What you want to do | Properties to use | How it helps |
Reward repeat buyers |
| Mention customer history in loyalty, or VIP-style messages. |
Show member-specific wording |
| Use tags such as VIP, or loyalty member in the message. |
Build post-purchase recommendations |
| Refer to products the customer has bought before when promoting refills, accessories, or related items. |
Add Shopify properties in Merge tags
Create a new widget or open the widget you want to edit.
Click the text element where you want to use Shopify properties.
Highlight the word or phrase you want to replace with a Merge tag.
In the right panel, click Merge tag.
Choose the Shopify context value that fits your message, such as product name, cart total value, or logged-in status.
Optional: add your own Example value. This value is used only in the preview, so you can see how the final text may look before publishing.
7. Save the widget.
One thing to keep in mind
The Merge tag needs a real value when the widget loads. If that value is missing, Claspo will skip showing the pop-up. So, product tags are best used where product data is available, and customer tags work only when Shopify can recognize the shopper.
Example: mention a cart item in an exit-intent pop-up
Here, we started with a ready-made exit-intent template. Our pop-up covers a common moment: someone adds a product to the cart, keeps browsing, and then moves to leave the store.
The headline had a generic word — “item”. We replaced it with the Shopify properties merge tag Products titles in cart, so the pop-up can use the product title from the shopper’s cart.
If you use another template, you can set the same exit-intent behavior in Audience & Triggering. For the full setup, read the tutorial.
Merge tags change the text inside the widget. Display rules control who sees it and when. To show widgets based on cart, product, or customer data from Shopify, read How to use Shopify properties in display rules.
